Born in the south of France to a Spanish mother and a Canadian father. At the age of three her family moved to Vancouver, Canada.
At eighteen she earned a swimming scholarship to UCLA where she received her B.A. in Art History. Following her undergraduate studies, she was accepted into UCLA's Graduate School of Film and Television, earning a M.F.A. in directing/film production.
She has been awarded the Motion Picture Association of America Award and the Mary Pickford Award for Excellence in documentary filmmaking.
